M4E #74: The Theory of constraints
The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy introduced by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt in his book "The Goal," published in 1984. The theory provides a systematic approach to identifying and overcoming constraints (bottlenecks) that limit an organization's ability to achieve its goals. Check about it in the following video from LeanVlog!

The most challenging step in the Theory of Constraints (TOC) often lies in accurately identifying the true constraints or bottlenecks within a complex system. This difficulty arises due to the intricate nature of organizational processes, dynamic environments or the potential resistance to change, among others.
By focusing on the most critical limitations within a system, TOC enables organizations to optimize their processes, improve efficiency, and achieve their goals more effectively. The benefits include increased throughput, faster delivery of products or services, better utilization of resources, enhanced decision-making based on throughput accounting, and a continuous improvement mindset (main topic here some many times in M4E!).
Even if in this newsletter we typically talk about manufacturing, the theory of constraints may be applied to other fields such as IT. You can read more about it here.
