M4E #56: The story of Dyson
Sorry for the delay this week! So many things to do! We’re back with the videos talking about specific companies and real industrial processes. And today is the turn of Dyson. Dyson is a British technology company known for its innovative household appliances, primarily in the areas of vacuum cleaners, bladeless fans and hand dryers. Time for Insights
While the Ballbarrow offered advantages, such as reduced effort in operation, it faced challenges in market adoption due to its unconventional design and relatively higher cost. However, Dyson won the Building Design Innovation Award in 1977 thanks to this invention, although Dyson considers it its greatest business mistake. He assigned the patent to the company (instead of licensing it) thus losing control over it.
Check “Ten lessons in design from James Dyson”. My favourite quote is the one that says that products “should be designed to show what they do”. If you think about Dyson products, this concept is all over them.
Dyson is going to invest £100 million in a new facility in Bristol that will employ hundreds of software and artificial intelligence engineers. This will expand the variety of innovation centers that Dyson has around the world, in the UK, Singapore or Malaysia. Let’s see what new innovative products Dyson brings us!
