M4E #45: RAMI 4.0, the German Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0
When building any modern manufacturing solution, standardization and interoperability are a must (we already treated this for example in M4E #18 or M4E #38). Today’s video from ZVEI, presents the RAMI 4.0 or Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0, a framework developed by the German Plattform Industrie 4.0 to help companies and organizations in the manufacturing industry to implement the principles of Industry 4.0
For those of you that are not German, you may notice something odd in the video. They are saying Industry “vier punkt null“, that is, 4.0 in German. Enjoy it!

ZVEI (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie e.V.) is the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, a trade association representing the electrical and electronics industry in Germany.
The RAMI 4.0 framework provides a common language and reference model for Industry 4.0, which helps to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing across different organizations and industries. This can lead to more rapid innovation and adoption of new technologies and practices.
RAMI 4.0 includes guidelines for the implementation of the AAS model (Asset Administration Shell), which is considered a core element of the RAMI 4.0 architecture. The AAS is a digital representation of a physical asset and we will find more about it in following M4E issues.
You can read one of the documents where the architecture was first defined here.
