M4E #30: Digital Twin vs Digital Thread
So we already covered the Digital Twin topic in M4E #17. Today we are going to expand this knowledge taking into account a concept that is quite related to a Digital Twin but quite different in essence: the Digital Thread. The next video from Lifecycle Insights introduces both concepts so you can understand well their differences as well as similarities. If you want to skip the Digital Twin part you can go to minute 4:15. Enjoy!
Time for Insights
In the end, we can say that a Digital Thread is a Digital Twin of a product in its whole lifecycle. Thus, it considers data coming from its different steps, starting at its design, following the manufacturing processes and finally how it behaves when being used in a real environment. The next picture (source) summarises really well the concept.
In Europe, Digital Threads will be realized through the Digital Product Passport, with a special focus on sustainability. Currently, there are no specific implementations although some initatives are willing to use the Asset Administration Shell paradigm.
Talking about sustainability and circular economy, Digital Threads will probably become circular also. Product data will also be registered after the end of its lifetime. Imagine for example a home appliance where some parts or materials could be used for new purposes. Storing information about how they where used in the past could provide great insights and help to better plan their recycling.
