M4E #2: Lean - 8 wastes explained by Supermarket Shopping
The next video from HP focuses on explaining on a funny way the 8 wastes considered by Lean. Try to identify all of them!
Time for Insights
Have you noticed the name of the main character? Tim P. Wood is an easy mnemonic to remember the 8 wastes (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, People, Waiting, Overproducing, Over processing and Defects). Another common mnemonic is Tim Woods, replacing the P from People with S from Skills. Just remember that the real waste is not People per se but not taking into account the talent and skills of that People!
At first, Tim believes that the best way to organize the shopping list is to do it alphabetically. However, he didn’t thought about all the hidden wastes in the process. Remember that the best way to improve a process is to see what happens in the field and that the most dangerous kind of waste is the waste we don’t recognize (Shigeo Shingo).
In the second part of the video Tim receives a pair of muda glasses. Muda is a japanese term that means wastefulness or uselessness and is a common synonym of “waste” in Lean.
