M4E #1: How Toyota Changed The Way We Make Things
Welcome to the first issue of Manufacturing 4 Everyone! The aim of this newsletter is to share insightful content regarding the world of manufacturing, lean management, Industry 4.0 and a variety of related topics. The main objective is to help people learn about all these concepts by using short videos, audios, news or blog posts that summarise one specific topic and then present a list of questions or points so the reader can think about them.
To start these series I thought that nothing could be better than learning more about how Toyota changed the way we make things by being the pioneer company in the creation and implantation of lean manufacturing.
So, as Manufacturing 4 Everyone aims to be a direct to the point newsletter, without further ado let’s get started with this really interesting video from Bloomberg!
Time for Insights
The original Toyota business was the manufacturing of looms. They devised a system that automatically stopped weaving when a thread was broken in order to avoid defects. This method is still used in the Toyota Production System to achieve Zero Defects.
Think how or if you can apply a similar model of defect prevention in your daily work (see 2:30 in the video).
Do you think that the Toyota production model can be applied in other areas apart from manufacturing or bigger territories than Japan?
